Goals

Research indicates that what works best to discourage non-smokers from taking up tobacco and to encourage smokers to quit is to raise the cost of tobacco and to adopt tobacco-free policies. The cost of tobacco will continue to increase without any help from us. Tobacco-free policies “de-normalize” tobacco use. As people become accustomed to tobacco-free environments at work, at play, and at home, smoke-free air and tobacco-free grounds become the norm. It is then no longer socially acceptable for smokers to light up wherever they please, contaminating their environment and everyone around them with exposure to the toxic brew of secondhand smoke. Our goal is to promote tobacco-free policies, especially where young adults spend their leisure time.

Our goal to de-normalize (change social views on) tobacco use in Fresno County, primarily among 18-29 year olds, by addressing three Priority Areas:

1. Countering Pro-Tobacco Influences in the Community,
2. Reducing Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS)
3. Reduce availability of tobacco to underage youth.

Recruitment

With the start of a new school year we are again recruiting young adults, ages 18-29, for membership on our IMPACT Executive Advisory Board. This is an exciting opportunity for young people to make a difference in Fresno County. The IMPACT Board directs our project, targets venues for interventions, and plans activities for their selected events. Learning new skills, building a resume, connecting with others, improving the health of the community, and having fun are just some of the benefits of serving on the IMPACT Board.
