What is an NP?

A nurse practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse with advanced academic and clinical training who is licensed to provide primary health care in collaboration with MD's and other health professionals. The nurse practitioner utilizes critical judgment in the performance of comprehensive health assessments, differential diagnosis, and implementation of management plans. NPs who meet the California State BRN requirements are able to furnish prescription medications, including controlled substances. NPs expertise includes an emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention, working in a variety of clinical settings, meeting health needs throughout an individual's life. NPs are educated through programs that grant either a certificate or master's degree. Upon graduation from an education program, NPs may choose - or be required by their state - to obtain national certification.
