What is an NP?
A nurse practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse
with advanced academic and clinical training who is licensed to provide
primary health care in collaboration with MD's and other health
professionals. The nurse practitioner utilizes critical judgment in the
performance of comprehensive health assessments, differential diagnosis,
and implementation of management plans. NPs who meet the California
State BRN requirements are able to furnish prescription medications,
including controlled substances. NPs expertise includes an emphasis on
health promotion and disease prevention, working in a variety of
clinical settings, meeting health needs throughout an individual's life.
NPs are educated through programs that grant either a certificate or
master's degree. Upon graduation from an education program, NPs may
choose - or be required by their state - to obtain national
certification.

What is a PA?
Physician assistants (PA) are health professionals
licensed to practice medicine with physician supervision. Physician
assistants are qualified by graduation from an accredited PA educational
program and/or certification by the National Commission on Certification
of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Within the physician/PA relationship,
physician assistants exercise a level of autonomy in medical
decision-making and provide a broad range of diagnostic, therapeutic,
and preventive services. The clinical role of physician assistant
includes both primary and specialty care in medical and surgical
practice settings in rural and urban areas. Physician assistant practice
is centered on patient care, and may include educational, research, and
administrative activities.

What is a CNM?
A certified nurse-midwife is a registered nurse who
has completed a program accredited by the American College of
Nurse-Midwives (ACNM). Nurse-midwifery practice is the independent
management of women's health care, focusing on pregnancy, childbirth,
the postpartum period, care of the newborn and the family planning and
gynecological needs of women. The CNM practices within a health care
system that provides for consultation or referral as indicated by the
health status of the client. Nurse-Midwives provide care in a variety of
settings including private practices, clinics, hospitals, birth centers
and the home.
