IMPACT Tobacco Control
Mini-Grant Success Stories

College Students KICK BUTTS!

These exciting projects are all promoting policies to change community norms around tobacco and exposure to secondhand smoke.

The Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Team created the “Pure 02 4 U” project to advocate for a tobacco-free policy for their West Hills College Campus in Coalinga.  The students themselves wrote the grant proposal, which won a mini-grant award for their campus from the SJVHC IMPACT Program.

Educating their community on the dangers of tobacco use and advocating with key campus administrators took up a great deal of their volunteer time and effort.  For Earth Day on campus, the SIFE Team displayed “body bags” tagged with signs indicating the cause of death from various tobacco-related diseases.  The SIFE Coordinator also recently announced that the team received numerous awards because of this project, including President Bush’s Service Award!  The tobacco-free policy for West Hills, while still pending, will be a great success story for this team and for their college community.
